Tips for Preventing Neck Skin Aging

by Johnny Jacks

As some approach their forties, wrinkles begin to appear on the neck and face. Others may notice neck wrinkles as early as their thirties. Conversely, there are cases where individuals in their fifties show no signs of wrinkles on their neck. All of these depend on lifestyle and daily skincare routines. If one day the neck skin shows signs of aging, what can be done to improve the situation? Let’s explore in this article.

Signs of Neck Skin Aging

Following the natural aging process, our skin begins to show signs of aging as we age. Similar to many other areas of the skin, neck skin aging manifests in the following ways:

  • Appearance of dark spots on the neck: The appearance of dark spots on the neck is due to an excessive increase in dark pigments. The size and color of these spots may change over time. Typically, as one ages, these dark spots tend to become darker and larger in diameter. However, this sign is rare.
  • Wrinkled, less elastic neck skin: Our bodies always retain a certain amount of water. One of its roles is to keep the skin hydrated, maintaining its elasticity and smoothness. As we age, the amount of water reserves decreases. This is why neck skin becomes wrinkled and less elastic over time.
  • Sagging skin: Collagen and elastin in the body are responsible for maintaining the structural integrity. This is why our skin appears vibrant. So why does neck skin sag? This is due to the decrease in collagen and elastin levels in the body. Studies have shown that from the age of 25 onwards, collagen levels gradually decline. Additionally, the skin around the neck is much thinner than other areas of the body. Therefore, signs of aging appear quickly and suddenly in this area.

Causes of Neck Skin Aging

Despite following a full skincare routine every day, you may still make some mistakes that can accelerate neck skin aging. Check if you are making the following errors in caring for this area of your skin.

  • Genetics: Sometimes genetic factors can also contribute to premature skin aging. Although daily neck skincare routines may not completely reverse aging, they can help prevent or delay its onset.
  • Not using moisturizer: Similar to skin in many other areas, our neck skin also needs moisturizing to maintain its health. Without moisturizer, your skin may become dry, dull, and start aging rapidly.
  • Skipping sunscreen for the neck: How do you typically care for your skin when exposed to sunlight? Do you use sunscreen with an appropriate SPF level? Most of us often forget to apply moisturizer and sunscreen to our neck. This is the leading cause of premature neck wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Performing repetitive motions: If you engage in a single activity at the neck repeatedly, such as tilting your head to look at your phone, it can be a contributing factor to the premature aging of your neck skin.
As collagen production declines, the skin will begin to lose its elasticity.

Daily Neck Care Routine

Refer to and implement the following daily neck care practices to improve or prevent the appearance of aging signs.

Neck Exercises

Relaxation exercises for the neck can help make the skin in this area firmer and smoother. This is because the movements increase blood flow, promoting collagen production. Therefore, exercising is a way to care for and combat aging in the neck area.

So what anti-aging neck exercises can you incorporate?

Forehead push exercise

  • Place both hands on your forehead creating an upside-down V shape with your forearms, apply gentle pressure, and hold for about 30 seconds.
  • Move both hands behind your head, interlock your fingers, creating an upside-down triangle with your body, and hold for 30 seconds.

Neck side-to-side movement exercise

  • Tilt your head to the left, pulling the skin of the left side of your neck taut, and hold for 30 seconds.
  • Continue with the head tilted to the right, feeling the skin on the right side of your neck stretch, and hold for 30 seconds.

Kiss stretch exercise for neck skin tightening

  • Tilt your head forward, pull the skin under your chin taut.
  • Pucker your lips as if preparing to kiss, and hold for 30 seconds.

Face-up neck stretch exercise

  • Tilt your head upward, eyes facing the ceiling, place your right hand on your temple, and gently press.
  • Move your mouth open and closed continuously 5-7 times.
  • Repeat the same with the other side.

Neck stretching exercise

  • Begin in a cobra pose.
  • Tilt your head up, eyes toward the ceiling, feel the neck stretch.
  • Hold for 30 seconds.

Exfoliation

Our bodies have millions of skin cells, and the process of cell regeneration is continuous. It’s estimated that every hour, about 30,000 – 40,000 dead skin cells are shed from the body. Dead cells can make the skin appear dull and increase the risk of clogged pores. This also accelerates the skin aging process.

When exfoliating the neck skin, you should choose products with ingredients suitable for your skin. Before exfoliating, remember to moisturize your skin. Apply a sufficient amount, gently massage evenly, don’t forget to apply a little under the chin and down to the collarbone.

In addition to chemical exfoliants, you can consider some natural ingredients:

  • Coffee grounds: This ingredient is widely used by many women for skincare. Coffee grounds not only effectively exfoliate dead skin cells but also contribute to moisturizing and anti-aging the skin.
  • Oatmeal and yogurt: A exfoliating formula that also smooths the skin, whitens, and moisturizes. With oatmeal and yogurt, the neck skin will be comprehensively cared for.
  • Brown sugar and fresh milk: Exfoliate the neck and body skin 2-3 times a week with brown sugar and fresh milk, and this area will appear brighter and smoother.

Using Neck Moisturizer

Moisturizing the neck is essential if you want to maintain its natural firmness. Additionally, you can use moisturizers containing vitamin C. Some studies have shown that vitamin C serum significantly reduces the potential damage to the skin’s epidermis from sunlight exposure.

Applying Sunscreen

Another crucial aspect of daily neck skincare is applying sunscreen. Dermatologists advise applying sunscreen whenever you go outside. Remember to use sunscreen even on cooler days and choose one with at least SPF 30.

Staying Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water helps keep the skin fresh by promoting toxin elimination. Keeping the body hydrated also helps maintain the elasticity and firmness of the skin. Occasionally, drinking a few glasses of natural fruit juice can provide essential nutrients needed for vital functions.

Taking Collagen Supplements

Collagen is a natural protein in the body’s connective tissues. It’s essential for keeping the skin plump and resilient. As you age, the body produces less collagen, leading to sagging skin. Collagen supplements in pill, liquid, or powdered form are ways you can supplement this.
